Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH), north of Houston Central Business District (CBD), garners 70% of the system's total traffic while Hobby Airport (HOU), south of the CBD, accounts for 30%. Ellington Field (EFD), south of Hobby, is both a commercial airport and a center for aerospace development.

The Houston Airport System's location in the south central United States places it equidistant from the East and West Coasts, allowing easy access to the nation's business centers. Houston Intercontinental Airport's frequent air service and numerous direct and connecting flights place the world's major cities within a day's plane ride of Houston.
